Hashtag research and selection for X campaigns
A hashtag is the label people will search, type and read. Choosing it carefully avoids clashes, embarrassing meanings and wasted effort.
What we check before choosing a hashtag
- Already in use? Search X for the exact tag and close variations.
- Meaning. Read it in every language your audience uses, with and without capital letters.
- Length and spelling. Short tags that are easy to type on a phone win over clever ones.
- Association. Check recent posts for anything unrelated or negative attached to the tag.
- Accessibility. Use CamelCase, such as #YourBrandLaunch, so screen readers can read each word.
The research process
Collect
List topics and phrases your audience already uses.
Draft
Write five to ten candidate tags.
Test
Search, read context and ask native speakers.
Choose
Pick one main tag and keep alternates ready.
Common mistakes
- Using a long sentence as a hashtag.
- Using two or three competing tags in the same campaign.
- Choosing a tag that is already attached to a controversy.
- Adding hashtags to every post instead of using one or two.
